Day 1-2: Los Angeles & San Diego

Leaving Los Angeles we follow the coast to California’s answer to winter weather, “always temperate” San Diego. Outdoors is where it’s at and we have two days here to explore. Hang with the surfing set on Mission Beach and feast upon a tasty mahi mahi taco. Or cycle in Balboa Park, before a meet and greet with the residents of the famed San Diego Zoo or Sea World.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 3: Sonoran Desert & Colorado River

A road trip just isn’t a road trip without miles and miles of cactus-studded desert, and sun-drenched Arizona doesn’t disappoint. It’s one of the largest and hottest deserts in North America and can fluctuate between dry and arid to lush and green, certainly a sight to behold so get those cameras ready for the perfect picture of the rolling sand dunes. Prepare yourself for the unexpected burst of colour at Salvation Mountain, this crazy man made mountain can also be spotted in the film `Into the Wild!’We finish the day at our camp by the Colorado River.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 4: Betty & Rusty’s Cowboy Camp

You’ll have the option for a refreshing morning swim in the mighty Colorado River before heading out for our Wild West Cowboy Camp at Betty & Rusty’s! This is a unique experience exclusive to TrekAmerica. Opt to mount your trusty steed and trot between the iconic saguaro cacti, with familiar curved arms and looming as high as 20 feet. Fresh from the saddle, tuck into an authentic chuck wagon dinner (that’s a mobile cookhouse) before a night under a million desert stars.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 5-6: Grand Canyon National Park

On the road north, drop by the ancient high-rise dwellings known as Montezuma Castle National Monument. Step back in time, and discover the hidden secrets of one of America’s most ancient cultures, the Anasazi. Now admire a masterpiece etched by wind and water: the Grand Canyon. Tread the Bright Angel Trail to Indian Gardens, or venture to Plateau Point; or take a helicopter flight for a birds-eye view and marvel at the brilliant colours. The canyon depths are nothing short of mind-blowing. Then again so is the sunrise and that’s free.

2013 departures: 2 en-route hotel nights paid locally

2014 departures: Hotels included in tour price

Day 7-8: Route 66 to Las Vegas

Next is the man-made wonder of the desert, Las Vegas. En route we drive along a section of the original Route 66 and visit the town of Seligman; rolling into this town feels like a living museum where time has stood still. A visit to the Snowcap Diner is always interesting!

Night life, high life, Las Vegas has it all. Take a tour of the Las Vegas Strip, and watch as night turns into day under the glare of neon marquees. Casino shows and excellent nightclubs make this truly “a city that never sleeps”. For an interesting view of Vegas, why not fly high above the glitzy buildings on an evening Strip flight or simply enjoy a spot of people watching; after all Vegas is certainly the place!

Day 9: Death Valley National Park

Our desert experience is completed by the perfect winter destination: Death Valley National Park. The blistering summer heat is no more, so your camera will lap up sights like Artist’s Palette, a giant egg-box of turquoise, orange and red mineral deposits, Zabriskie Point, and the immense perspectives of Dante’s View, a perfect view indeed!

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 10: Los Angeles

Kick up the Mojave Desert dust as we head for Beverley Hills and Hollywood, then make like a celeb on Sunset Strip, with its glam stores and glitzy night life. We then make our way back to the hotel where the tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 hrs.

Update: From 01 Jan 14 we’ll enjoy a tour of Hollywood, home to the most famous real estate sign in the world before heading to eclectic Venice Beach for a spot of people watching on the sand and under the Californian sunshine. Venice Beach is like a virtual carnival running year round with free admission.

We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
